1. FRLHT on a Transition Path. . . .Trimurti Avatar Date:

The genesis of the FRLHT lies in an early experience of  witnessing a rich tribal health tradition of the Thakur tribe in coastal Maharashtra in 1982. Realizing the need to document and assess these and similar other ecosystem and community specific health practices, a nation wide network of NGOs, Medical colleges and Research institutes called the Lok Swasthya Parampara Samvardhana Samithi (LSPSS) was subsequently born in 1986. It was these two experiences that threw up the idea of FRLHT which was born later in 1993.
Subsequently during 1993 - 2007, FRLHT vigorously focused its attention on two sectors; (i) Medicinal Plants Conservation, and (ii) Revitalisation of Local Health Traditions. Consequently, several innovative initiatives in these two sectors took shape across different parts of the country, which yielded an enormous amount of satisfying results. As a result, FRLHT’s name came to be mainly associated across the country with in situ< conservation of medicinal plants, documentation of local health traditions, national level comprehensive database on medicinal plants, creation of herbal gardens, and other such revitalization initiatives.
FRLHT, with its 14 years of experience in research and action is all geared up to transform from a single faceted research organization to a 3-faced persona. These additional facets will provide the much needed focus firstly on transfer of knowledge (from the parent FRLHT and its knowledge partners) to hundreds of capable young health professionals who can serve the society, and secondly to promote by ethical commerce, the contemporary and creative applications of Ayurveda and Yoga.
It is necessary to recall that the first face of FRLHT was primarily inward looking, characterized by rigour, patience, and the pursuit of academic excellence. The second knowledge transfer face will be outward looking and takes the form of Indian Institute of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine (IIAIM). It will be driven by an outreach motivation in order to impregnate the healthcare landscape of the country with well trained professionals. The third face will be a corporate entity in the form of Indian Health Systems Pvt. Ltd.(IHS),which will engage in ethical commerce of traditional medical knowledge. This face would need the creation of a worldwide network of high quality health services based on Ayurveda and Yoga.
FRLHT unveiled this 3 faced persona as the tri-murti avaatar during a high profile event held at Bangalore on 11th April 2008. On this occasion, its Founder Director, Mr. Darshan Shankar stepped down and handed over the FRLHT’s reins to Mr. D K Ved, the Additional Director. The tri-murti avtaar event also witnessed the participation of many bigwigs such as Mr. Sam Pitroda, Chairman, Knowledge Commission of India, Mr. ShibuLal, CEO, Infosys, Dr. Kasturirangan, former chairman, ISRO, Ms. Anita Das, Secretary, Department of Health and Family Welfare, GoI and Mr. B S Parsheera, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests, GoI. Several other dignitaries from different Ministries, State Forest Departments, Research and Academic Institutes, Herbal Industries, NGOs and local communities were also present. An exhibition on various initiatives of the organisation was also put up on the occassion.
